Camelina planted by drone: innovation in Quebec

In our fields in Quebec, camelina was planted by drone! Sown in the fall of 2025 and harvested in the spring of 2026, the camelina seeds are precisely dropped from the belly of the drone above our field plots .

This method is not only fascinating to observe, but also represents a major technological leap for sustainable agriculture. The drone allows for fast, uniform, and much more environmentally friendly sowing than traditional methods, reducing the use of heavy machinery and limiting soil disturbance.

Why is this technique important ?

Modern agriculture faces several challenges: climate change, biodiversity preservation, and growing demand for healthy foods. Camelina, rich in omega-3s, is a crop perfectly suited to Quebec's soils and climate. By using drones, we maximize our chances of producing quality seeds while minimizing environmental impact.

This type of technology perfectly illustrates our mission at Signé Caméline: to combine innovation and sustainability to create healthy food from our local lands.

How does it work ?

  1. Camelina seeds are prepared and placed in the drone's tank.

  1. The drone flies over the field and releases the seeds evenly and precisely.

  1. The seeds fall gently to the soil and begin their growth cycle naturally.

This method also allows us to sow in the field, even when it is very wet or muddy , which would be very complicated with traditional techniques.

A step towards the agriculture of the future

Watching camelina take root thanks to technology is an incredible experience. It reminds us that it is possible to combine agricultural tradition and innovation, while respecting nature and our land.

For those who want to delve deeper into this technique, here is an excellent explanatory article: Camelina sown by drone - The Farmers' Bulletin
